Green pond water? The secret to getting clear pond water for good!

The number one "problem" for pond lovers is yukky green water. We have been making ponds for over 20 years and know a thing or two about water and this information could save yu a lot of time, worry and money :)   It's pretty simple really...

Green pond water is caused by algae and garden centers and aquatics shops don't want you to know this but getting clear water is simpler than you think. Buying expensive chemicals and filters is great for garden centers, it makes them £££ over and over again.Why? because it doesn't work, at least not for long and you will be back for something else later in the season or next year.

Green water is caused by algae. Algae turns nutrients in the water (with sunlight ) into more algae. Simple.

Algae blooms when new, nutrient rich water is added to a pond ie:tap water. When the nutrients are used up the algae will stop.

People unknowingly "add" algae to water in several ways, through topping up the pond with tap water, adding new plants in soil full of nutrients or through feeding fish.(fish also produce nutrient rich waste). So you now you know how to think about slowing the nutrient side of the triangle.

The next part of the solution is reducing the light. Ever wondered why a pond covered in lilly leaves or duckweed is so clear underneath? Simply that plant leaves stop sunlight reaching the algae. It will not grow in the shade. Gardeners are experts in knowing how to utilise sunlight to make plants as good as possible, you just need to think of the pond as a vertical flower bed. If the plants in and above the water thrive the algae will not.

are attachments and pre filters needed on pond pumps?

An interesting question has come up this week with a system I assembled for a customer. When we set the pump up to suit whatever you are making we obviously supply the tubing and nozzles but there are a lot of spare attachments or accessories in the box as well. Are they needed?
There is a tendency for pump and pond manufacturers to make things sound much more complicated than they actually are. Our system is very straight forward. You connect the pump to the panel and put the pump in the water.
When the pump is in the water you then fit either the supplied tube (running the water through a water feature or waterfall or you fit the spray nozzle and use it to create a fountain.
Most modern pumps (including ours) also have lots of accessories and attachments most of which are never needed.
You can for example use a "T piece" so that half the water goes up the tube , the other half to the fountain. There is also a pre-filter which I have never used.
If you look at one of our pumps in the picture at the top of the page you will see it is fitted with a fountain spray nozzle. Attaching a tube instead is just about the only other variation in 99% of cases. Of course if you need something unusual, just ask but to answer the original question....simple is best (in my opinion)

Christmas and new year :)

What angle should my solar panel be so my fountain runs for as much of the day as possible?

People are often suprised by the angle that solar panels work best. These panels are HUGE compared to the ones we use but notice how shallow the angle is. In your garden, with our small panels, think almost flat then up a bit... That means that whatever position the sun is , it's light will be on the glass, so that your fountain runs longer.

Well done to the Design and Build Team. They've just finished creating a fantastic garden which will be part of the exhibition at the Southport Flower Show as from tomorrow using a solar solutions fountain. A really worthwhile charity organisation.

A customers "natural pond"

A lovely photo of a customers fountain. A very nice natural planting around the edge. A really good example of getting "the natural look" just right. It can take a bit of time to get thiss look but when its done right it looks like its always been there. Snowy the dog seems to approve :)

We have managed to secure a price break on our high powered pump system which we are happy to be passing on to you. This means for an extrra £55 you can now upgrade from our standard system to our high power 1500 litre per hour pump. Remember you can always turn the volume doiwn if you don't need it !

Why our pumps are different and what we test...

I'm often asked what we test and why our fountain systems are different. I was pondering this question this week while testing a solar powered system for a charity garden.
The pumps we use are quite simply the best on the market but, during the visual check of the internals I noticed parrt of the impeller housing was not sitting flush. After inspection and replacement of seal, I noticed a slight imperfection in the plastic moulding. I carefully removed the burr and replaced. Much better!
Then I remove the factory connectors and replaced with our preffered connectors which are more durable and give better contact.
Next the cable on the solar panel was removed because its contact performance was poor. Replaced with a  double insulated with a fully approved outdoor rubber cable that is highly resistant to the UK weather conditions and will not degrade. Size mm2: 1 MM designed to withstand a temerature range of : -25C TO + 85C 
With any 12-24 volt system getting good contacts and a really well put together means that a 1500 litre per hour system does just that. It is easy to cut corners and lose 10% here and 10% there. Thats why we thoroughly test each one. That way, we know we have done it right and have put together a system that will out perform its rivals and give years of service!
